The Annual Yard of the Year award sponsored by the Villa Hills Garden Club is always a delightful evening to be able to stroll through such amazing gardens. We were fortunate to have received five nominations this year and the task of choosing just one was a very difficult.
Nominees were: Robin & Gary Crone, 2502 Woodstone Way; Marti & Jan Davey, 2688 Pineview Drive; Norma & Tom Oliver, 814 Kenridge Street; Sharon Perez, 1028 Carpenter’s Trace and Greg Zimmerman, 826 Mary Street. Each entry is recognized for all of the hard work and endless hours involved in maintaining such beautiful landscapes.

After building their English Tutor home, they wanted to begin landscaping and chose to create an inviting entrance by framing the sidewalk leading to their front porch. Two small, “Karen” Azealia were planted, which Marti nurtured for two years watering daily to ensure their success. Roses, were added along with Climbing Hydrangea, and Spirea with the deep green contrast of Hollies and Boxwoods. Each summer a spray of red and white begonia mixed with blue Ageratum are add for that extra splash of color.
Of course, with any gardener there is always room for expansion. And so, it began. To create a framework around their yard, they added a striking combination of Viburnum, Barberries and Azealias. Marti has a lovely shade garden which she proudly commented reminds her of her mother. She was given an Hydrangea as a gift at her mother’s passing which she has split and shared with her children. They are prominently featured among Bleeding Hearts, False Indigo, Pink Astillbe, Japanese painted Fern and the hardy texture of large leaf Hosta.
An island alongside the front edge of their yard is bordered by manicured boxwoods and rod iron fencing that contain perennials bursting with shades of purple, orange, pink and white. As you stroll along the pathway to the backyard you pass striking red roses and contracting Black Eyed-Susan’s. When you open the charming gate you find the backyard has been transformed into a virtual “English Garden”.
Cozy garden areas invite you to wonder through and experience each one. The spacious covered porch that is surrounded with lush beds of Shasta Daisies, Roses, Little Lime Hydrangea, and “old fashioned” Japanese Anemones would be a welcome retreat after a long day in the “Garden”.
The rose Garden boasts hues of pink, red and peach, while an herb garden alongside a quaint, little cottage beckons you to rest in one of the Adirondack chairs situated around the firepit to share some roasted marshmallows on a cool evening. The Davey’s have also incorporated a variety of sculptures and pottery to further enhance the landscape. Marti and Jan have a lovely setting with a mix of formal and whimsical English gardens. All of this takes a joint effort and a commitment to their passion for gardening.
It is easy to see why they were the choice for the Yard of the Year award and the Garden Club congratulates them for all of their efforts.
